AGE OF PUBERTY
[The Church of the 2nd Half of Enlightenment]
Maxalot presents
Boris Hoppek
In Amsterdam for the very first time, legendary
Barcelona-based urban artist Boris Hoppek will
install apply his revered stand-alone style to a
unique floating Showroom in the IJ lake to the North of the city.
Curated by Maxalot, the exhibition is built
around a cardboard church covered in iconic
detail drawings, and topped with a flashing neon
light brandishing a signature Boris Hoppek
bill-board on its steeple.
The exhibition will also see the launch of an
exclusive new series of Boris Hoppek paintings,
objects and sculptures.
For the opening night, the “The Church of the 2nd
Half of Enlightenment” will play host to a live
concert by a major international punk electro
outfit.
From naive chalk drawings on the street to
complex, labour-intensive gallery installations
in cardboard, Boris Hoppek’s witty, irreverant
and wildly popular world reflects the essence of
our species. In his distinctive tone of
simplistic but profound irony he tackles themes
of love, sex, struggle, racism, immigration and
nationalism with visual stories around his
compelling and lovable human-like characters.
Perhaps best known for his iconic family of plush
“Bimbo” dolls, Hoppek’s work is at times wickedly
funny and at others strangely sinister, as he
continues his search for new forms of expression.
His revered grafitti in chalk and spray-paint has
be seen and admired in cities across Europe, from
Berlin to Barcelona since 1990.
